To invoke a metaphor, there are no silver bullets that will destroy those experiences in our past (or present) that suck the life from us. There is no magic that will cause our issues to disappear in a poof of smoke. But there is a strength within us that can access the healing virtue of the Universe. That strength is realized through language. That is why personal journaling is so powerful.

David, the shepherd boy who became King of Israel journaled. The well-crafted poetry and prose from his journal were gifted to humanity as the very Word of God.

In addition to performance pieces for the Temple orchestra and other musings, David wrote directives to his own soul. He penned, “Why so downcast, oh my soul, put your hop in God” (Psalm 42:5). His soul responded to the language of wholeness causing him to declare, “I will be glad and rejoice…” (Psalm 31:7).

As you cloak your life in the language of love and forgiveness through the discipline of personal journaling, your character and personality emerge full of integrity. Ultimately as you are bathed with this virtue, personal defeat is no longer an issue.

So, take out a piece of paper and let your tongue become the pen of a ready writer (Psalm 45:1).

Journaling Principle

Create a healing space.

Journaling begins long before you put pen to paper. It starts with being in a restorative environment, one that allows you to be reflective and introspective. Such environments include, for example, a sanctuary created in your home, nature, museums or places of worship.
